Backbone's musical journey began in the cultural tapestry of Mondim de Basto, where he was immersed in a diverse range of influences, from classical music to jazz and African rhythms, curated by his father. The shift to Porto in 2005 marked a transformative period, exposing Afonso to the dynamic world of raves, particularly the vibrant Drum and Bass scene. Influenced by iconic names like ED Rush, Optical, and Goldie, he navigated the deep funk-bass pressures, drawing inspiration from the rich soundscape of the underground.
In 2008, Backbone delved into music on a technical level through a sound technician course. This led to an exploration of techno, inspired by luminaries such as Jeff Mills, James Ruskin, and Richie Hawtin. His DJing journey commenced in 2012 under the mentorship of Sepypes at the eclectic Trip Vision parties, solidifying his presence in Portugal's underground music scene. Backbone actively contributed to the burgeoning movements across northern Portugal, gracing renowned venues like Gare Porto and Lux Frágil.
Recognizing the call to contribute to his roots, Mondim de Basto, Afonso initiated the Vinculum festival in 2018, growing into an international platform featuring techno visionaries. His discography, starting with a 2002 EP on Counterchange, reflects a significant artistic evolution, culminating in an album signed by Inlands on the same label.
As Backbone defines his music, it echoes the raw baselines/felling of jungle music and the synth waves of techno, creating a sonic tapestry that lingers in the listener's soul from the first note. In the realm of the underground, Backbone embodies strength, determination, and artistic excellence, exploring the entire spectrum of techno with an unwavering dedication to rhythm as a profound expression of the soul.
