Subject Xero are a duo who are based in Brighton but originally from Kosovo and Thailand.
Hard bass strike unit Subject Xero are on a mission to shake club music out of a state of complacency. You might call their musical approach techno, but it’s a multifaceted, distortion caked interpretation of that term which leans towards drum & bass, garage and grime as much as Detroit machine funk. The Brighton-based tech punk aggravators take their cues from the vivid dystopian fantasies of anime and sci-fi in pursuit of a sound they refer to as FutureTech – a mixed-up reflection of the reality-bending present day and the precarity of tomorrow.
With Kosovan and Thai heritage respectively, Subject Xero came together through a mutual obsession with music collecting and production. Whether mixing analogue or digital, vinyl culture informs their practice as DJs – the art of digging and the craft of cutting and scratching, dissembling the tracks they play as component parts and mashing them together to create something wholly new. In the studio, an outboard, hardware-oriented approach is intrinsic to their potent, nerve-shredding sound. Visceral studio jams provide the bedrock of material which they re-tool and shape into incisive club weapons.
The world is catching on to Subject Xero– their debut release landed in the top 2 and top 5 on Traxsource and Beatport respectively, while they also run the Kohe and Omega Club Nights labels as vessels for their own productions and those of their peers. Garnering support from a wide range of industry leaders and pushing their sound via the Streets Are Hot residency on leading South Coast station Trickstar Radio, they already boast an imposing presence which traverses scene divisions thanks to their distinctive, non-conformist sound.
In a blizzard of thunderous kicks and re-purposed sonic matter rendered as barbed hooks, Subject Xero are leaning in hard on the future and shaping it in their own brutalist, no-prisoners style.O
